Choose Dandeli if your group wants adventure
A small town in the Western Ghats of Karnataka, surrounded by dense forest, rolling hills and the Kali River. The Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary is home to the black panther and the Malabar pied hornbill, and the river is the place for rafting and kayaking. At night the forest comes alive with sound.
Dandeli is the adventure day of the Karnataka trips. Groups arrive in the morning after an overnight drive, spend the day on the Kali River and in the forest, and end with a rain dance, DJ and campfire at the resort before moving on.
Choose Gokarna if your group wants the beach
A temple town on the Arabian Sea in Karnataka, where pilgrims and beach travellers share the same coast. The Mahabaleshwar Temple houses the Atmalinga of Lord Shiva, Om Beach is named for its shape and is the place to watch the sunset, and Kudle Beach is a short trek away.
Gokarna is the beach stop of the Gokarna packages, quieter than Goa and known for its temple town and coves. Groups visit Om Beach and Kudle Beach for the sunset, with Yana Caves, Mirjan Fort or Murudeshwar on the way depending on the package.
Or do both in one trip
Dandeli and Gokarna are a few hours apart by road, so most groups combine them. The Dandeli + Gokarna by Train takes 4 days from Kuttippuram by train: a full adventure day in Dandeli, then Yana Caves, Om Beach and Murudeshwar. The Chikmagalur + Dandeli + Gokarna adds the peaks of Chikmagalur over 5 days, with pickup at Mangalore station.
Safety tips
- Wear quick-drying clothes and footwear that can get wet for rafting and kayaking.
- Leave phones and wallets in the bus or a waterproof pouch during water activities.
- Follow the instructors' safety briefing and keep life jackets on throughout.
- The paths between Gokarna's beaches are rocky; wear sandals with grip.
- Do not swim beyond the safe area: currents can be strong.
